These stunning Dhaka textiles are of exceptional quality and design. Made of 100% mercerized cotton, Dhaka is handwoven by women on traditional wooden looms. The designs are often so complex and the work so meticulous that most weavers can make only half a metre of cloth per day. The modern design and color combinations are exquisite!
Our Dhaka cloth is made by women belonging to a woman's NGO (non-governmental organization) whose mandate is to provide disadvantaged women with skill development and employment opportunities. They also seek to maintain the art of Dhaka weaving as a traditional craft. Demand for Dhaka has decreased within Nepal given the competition in the market from cheaper machine made clothing. This group has revolutionized the design and color schemes of their products in the hope of developing an international market for their goods.
One of our main ways to support this group is to find appropriate and successful products that they can make for the North American market. Feel free to share your ideas with us!
Our textiles have received high praise from the Canadian Museum of Textiles in Toronto, Canada. They noted the high quality of weave and creativity in design. Several Didi Bahini textiles can be found in their boutique shop.
